40+ years experience
The Pediatric Wellness Center of Amarillo opened its doors for primary care services in mid-September of 2013 because Drs. Pia and Rolf Habersang are passionate about caring for children and their families. Each has over 40 years of experience in the healthcare field – she as a Nurse Practitioner and him as a Physician – mainly in Pediatrics. For many of those years, the Pedi Provider Clinic /Texas Tech Health Science Center was their home “away from home” where they provided care for children, many of them with special needs. Invariably, families who entrusted their children to their care questioned whether the “standard of care” is enough and or the right intervention for their children.
Hence, both Drs Habersang explored, researched and studied alternative approaches to allow a child to reach his or her potential in the best state of wellness even if at times illness presents itself. Their approach to strengthening a child’s immune system through healthy nutrition became the focus of not only helping children but also empowering parents through education.
That modality is based on the sayings of the father of medicine, Hippocrates who stated over 2000 years ago:
- “The Natural healing force within each of us is the greatest force in getting well.”
- “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”
making a difference
We partner with parents of infants, children, and adolescents and other systems of care that surround them so that all children will be well and healthy whatever their life circumstances, challenges and resources may be so they may succeed as early learners and have opportunities to thrive and reach their potential.
Our goal is to make a difference in the life of children by providing quality health care. We love what we do!
After retiring in 2013 from Texas Tech Pedi Providers – Dr. Pia Habersang decided to provide a place for those families who opt to pursue primary health care for their children without the pressure to conform to conventional care (which is more likely the case within an academic setting of a Medical School), e.g. mandates for vaccinations or adherence to “protocols”.
The parents’ educated decisions about what is best for their children to optimize their well-being is an important and fundamental aspect of the relationship between parents and providers. Their questions and decisions, either way, whether to vaccinate their child or not, will always be respected at the Pediatric Wellness Center of Amarillo.

Michelle Richards, MSN, APRN, FNP-C
Michelle Richards joined the Pediatric Wellness Center of Amarillo in the Spring 2022 as a family nurse practitioner. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing May 2010 from West Texas A&M University. Her diverse working background includes acute care at BSA Hospital and Quail Creek Surgical Center. She also has experience in Home Health Care. After years of caring for patients, she realized many chronic problems could be prevented. Michelle became interested in a holistic approach to caring for patients and a desire to provide education on wellness and disease prevention to families in the area.
As for herself, having her own children followed at PWCA for many years and witnessing the impact a holistic approach had on her own children was a driving force in her further pursuit of a holistic approach to healthcare/pediatrics. With this dedication, she pursued an advanced nursing degree. She graduated from West Texas A&M University with her Masters of Science in Nursing in 2021. Michelle is licensed as an Advance Practice Registered Nurse, Family Nurse Practitioner, by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She is excited to be a part of the Pediatric Wellness Center of Amarillo team and to serve the wonderful families who are clients of the Pediatric Wellness Center of Amarillo.
While the laws differ by state, nurse practitioners in Texas can work directly with patients, either under a physician’s care or as part of a health team. They can assess, diagnose, treat and prescribe. At the Pediatric Wellness Center, Dr. Pia Habersang, EdD, CNS, APRN, and Michelle Richards APRN, FNP-C discuss all patient encounters with Dr. Habersang, MD on a weekly basis and consult with him depending on the issues at hand.
